Natural Hair Journey Began: 2015

When did you fall in love with your natural hair?

B: I wore a relaxer prior to my natural hair journey. So growing it out was a chore. I decided that the grow-out period was just taking too long. You know that period of being in between a relaxer with 4 inches of new growth. My straight hair was losing the battle to the new growth. So instead of trying to wait for the length that I wanted... I took the leap and did the big chop. That leap of faith was the best thing I could have done because I immediately fell in love with my natural hair.

Do you have good hair?

B: I absolutely hate that term. Good hair, what is that and who made up that term? My hair is healthy. My product regimen determines how my curls will pop or if I want to see more of a wooly effect. My hair is awesome because it is a chameleon. It’s not bound to the physical restraints of other hair types. So to answer your question no I do not have good hair I have AWESOME HAIR!

What are your hair goals?

B: My hair goal is to add way more circumference to my hair. My kinky hair inspirations are Amara La Negra and Angela Davis. I want you to see the silhouette of my afro before you see me.

What’s your hair regimen?
B: I shampoo bi-weekly. Wash day can be a chore, but I still feel that it is a day of self-care. I believe in taking good care of myself so I truly like to indulge in holistic products. However, I love to experiment with new products. Overall, I prefer my products to be green and clean!

What does your hair represent to you?

B: My hair is fluffy with a fierce personality. She is the part of me that dresses up my wardrobe or adds a little swagger to my make up. My hair enhances everything I put onto my body!

What comments or reactions have you received from wearing your natural hair? Friends? Family? Significant Other? Your Job? The Public?

B: I receive nothing but compliments about my hair. Random strangers always want to touch my hair. Oh and do not let me forget those that are bold enough to sneak a touch in without asking first! They are funny little creepy people. It’s all good though because sometimes it's just fun being the catalyst for change amongst the culturally ignorant.

What natural hairstyle makes you feel like you are on the Catwalk?
B: I am an artist so I love to push the boundaries. I love anything Avante Garde!

Name 3 physical attributes you love about yourself?
B: I love my eyes, lips, and my hair!

What would you change about yourself physically to make you feel confident or beautiful?

B: I actually do not want to make changes to my physical appearance. Honestly, I feel like I am an exotic beauty! However, since height is a factor when booking jobs for runway shows, I would love to be about three inches taller…
Oh well, you can’t have it all. So I am perfectly fine being a print or commercial model!
